Many women who have little or no formal education are determined to build an independent economic life, and to have a better future for themselves and their family.
This is the case of Santa, the president of the Community Bank of Friendship Bridge, "Flores del Milagro". Santa is 47 years old. She did not attend school. However, she started five years ago with the business of selling bread, drinks and food (meat empanadas, chicken, fish and chips). She shares that she was able to open her business with a lot of effort and now has regular customers. She is married, and had three children who died as children due to a lack of access to health services.
Santa is requesting the first loan with Kiva, which will be a great help for her to invest in the business. She will buy drinks and potatoes wholesale.
There are seven women in the communal bank who are of Mayan / Mam descent, who live in the tropical zone of the Department / State of Quetzaltenango. For a living, they sell regional food, drinks, and meat (chicken, beef). They expect monthly meetings when they offer mutual support and make loan payments. The women also learn about topics on health, hygiene, use of medicinal plants, prioritization of expenses, and nutrition. They are empowered with this new information. Puente de Amistad calls the combination of loans, education and health services "Microcredit Plus".
The effective partnership between Kiva and Puente de Amistad lenders allows women like Santa to be ready to move towards a prosperous future.

In een groepsproject krijgt ieder lid van de groep een individuele lening, maar maakt onderdeel uit van een groep individuen. De groep is er om ondersteuning te bieden aan de leden en zorgt voor een systeem van sociale controle bij het terugbetalen van de leningen.
Groepen kunnen wel of niet formeel gebonden zijn door een groepsgarantie. Indien er sprake is van een groepsgarantie, zijn de leden van de groep gezamenlijk verantwoordelijk voor de terugbetalingen van hun mede groepsleden indien deze te laat of niet terugbetalen.
Kiva’s veldpartners beschrijven vaak specifiek één lener uit de groep. De beschrijving van het project, de sector en andere kenmerken van het profiel van het groepsproject worden ontleend aan die ene specifieke lener. De overige leden van de groep zijn niet verplicht hun lening voor hetzelfde doel te gebruiken.
